John Legend has explored a new musical direction on his latest album, MUSE, with longtime friend and collaborator Pharrell Williams playing a key role in shaping its sound.

Released worldwide on October 23, the 16-track album was produced and co-written by Williams, marking a new creative approach for the Grammy-winning singer.

Speaking to the Associated Press while promoting the album, Legend said he wanted every project to represent his best work. Working with Williams on an entire album, he added, gave him an opportunity to challenge himself creatively.

Legend, who is also writing for Broadway, said he was exploring new creative avenues to bring fresh challenges to his music. Williams encouraged him to experiment with different vocal styles, including a talk-singing approach that sounds more like conversation than conventional singing.

Legend cited the track ‘Fireflies’ as an example, explaining that some passages lean towards spoken delivery rather than a traditional melody. He said the approach was Williams’ idea and reflected the value of working with new people who bring different perspectives to music.

The singer also recalled receiving praise from rapper Jay-Z, who once told him, “You’re our voice.” Legend said hip-hop had become an important part of his musical legacy, noting that rappers often feature him on tracks when they believe his contribution will add something special.

Legend made his debut with Get Lifted in 2004. Since then, he has released 11 studio albums, six live albums, two video albums and three extended plays, alongside numerous singles.
