Two unidentified men were beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of attempting to steal a battery-powered autorickshaw in Rangpur's Gangachara upazila early Sunday.
The incident took place near the Pukurkhuri Dola canal in Bagpur Bagerhat village under Barabil Union.
According to the local residents, the two men allegedly attempted to take a autorickshaw from the house of Sohel Mia in the village in the early hours. After noticing the incident, Sohel raised the alarm.
The imam of a nearby mosque then announced over the mosque’s loudspeaker that thieves had been spotted, prompting local residents and worshippers arriving for Fajr prayers to join the pursuit.
The two men reportedly abandoned the auto-rickshaw and tried to flee. They were eventually caught near the Pukurkhuri Dola canal in the Uttar Panapukur area, about half a kilometre west of Sohel Mia’s house.
The mob allegedly beat the men to death at the scene.
Police rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident. The identities of the deceased had not been established immediately.
The police have also informed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to assist in identifying the victims and determining the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Gangachara Model Police Station OC Abdur Sabur said police had visited the scene and that further details would emerge through the investigation.
