Iranian forces have launched drone strikes on a base belonging to the Iranian Kurdish opposition group Komala in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, targeting its headquarters in Balisan on Saturday night, Iranian media reported on Sunday (October 25).
Iran’s Mehr news agency said the operation was carried out by the ground forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), describing Komala as a terrorist and separatist group.
Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region hosts several camps and bases belonging to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups, which Tehran has repeatedly targeted since the Middle East war began in February.
Iran accuses the groups of receiving support from Israel, its regional adversary. However, the IRGC had not immediately issued a separate statement claiming responsibility for the latest strikes, according to AFP.
In one of the deadliest recent attacks, nine Komala members were killed near the Iraqi city of Sulaymaniyah on July 17.
