Sajek road blockade continues

RANGAMATI, Oct 25: The Sajek Gonoodhikar Rokkha Committee and Sajek Karbari Association have continued their indefinite road blockade on the Sajek tourist route in Rangamati’s Baghaichhari upazila on Sunday citing the failure to implement their three-point demands.

Amid this situation, a three-member investigation team led by the Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) has been asked to hold discussions on Monday with the protesters in Sajek to hear their concerns and demands and explore ways to resolve the ongoing crisis.

Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, disclosed the initiative at a meeting with headmen and karbaris of Rangamati district on Sunday.

After a meeting with the local administration and stakeholders, Wadud Bhuiyan said the government was determined to resolve the ongoing problems in Sajek and other parts of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), stressing that dialogue and cooperation among all stakeholders, regardless of political affiliation, were essential to ensuring peace, communal harmony and development in the hill region.

The meeting was held at the Rangamati Deputy Commissioner's (DC) conference room with DC Nazma Ashrafi in the chair. Former Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Minister Dipen Dewan, MP, and Rangamati Superintendent of Police Mohammad Abdur Rakib, Additional Deputy Commissioner Ekramul Haque Bhuiyan, Additional District Magistrate Nishat Sharmin, and local headmen and karbaris were also present the meeting.
