Mohammad Naim Sheikh and Mahfizul Islam Robin delivered commanding double centuries in the National Cricket League, putting two potential Bangladesh opening options firmly in the spotlight ahead of the home Test series against West Indies.

Naim struck 282 for Dhaka against Rajshahi Division, while Mahfizul remained unbeaten on 217 for Mymensingh against Chattogram Division. Their performances came in the fourth round of the domestic first-class competition, where both have been among the most consistent run-scorers this season.

Naim resumed on 171 not out and went on to make 282 off 369 deliveries, hitting 21 fours and seven sixes. He surpassed his previous first-class best of 180 before being caught off spinner Rahim Ahmed. Dhaka were eventually bowled out for 521, with captain Mahidul Islam Ankon contributing an impressive 165.

Mahfizul also converted an overnight century into a double hundred, advancing from 156 not out to 217 off 351 balls. His innings included 20 fours and two sixes as Mymensingh declared at 465 for seven.

The twin performances have added weight to the debate over Bangladesh's opening options. Chief selector Habibul Bashar had indicated that performances in the NCL would help the selectors assess alternatives beyond the two specialist openers named in the squad for the first West Indies Test, Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Shadman Islam.

Naim's latest innings extended a productive run in the competition, while Mahfizul continued a season in which he has repeatedly converted starts into substantial scores. The two batters have therefore given the selectors fresh evidence to consider, although a single outstanding innings does not automatically settle questions about international readiness.

The challenge for the selection panel is to assess more than the headline scores. Consistency across matches, the quality of opposition, adaptability to different conditions and the demands of Test cricket will all matter when weighing potential candidates.

The timing is particularly relevant because Bangladesh's first Test against West Indies begins in Mirpur on October 28. With the squad already announced, the immediate question is whether the latest NCL performances will influence future selection decisions rather than the confirmed team for the opening match.

For Naim and Mahfizul, the double centuries represent strong statements of form. For the selectors, they provide a timely reminder that competition for places at the top of the order remains active beyond the national squad.
