Opposition Chief Whip and National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has warned the BNP against attempting to install its loyalists in a caretaker government, arguing that without fundamental state reforms, any party coming to power could follow the path of Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian rule.
“It is futile to merely change the driver; the very engine that powers the state must be replaced. Otherwise, even the most skilled driver would be unable to steer the vehicle in the right direction,” he remarked.
Nahid made the remarks at a press conference at Kachari Royal Party Centre in Munshiganj on Monday, ahead of an organisational coordination meeting to review the party’s progress and discuss the upcoming local government elections.
Accusing the BNP of seeking to concentrate power in its own hands, he alleged that the party was again manoeuvring to install its preferred candidate as chief adviser to a caretaker government, recalling its failed attempt to influence the arrangement in 2006.
