A total of 174 Bangladeshi nationals have returned home from Libya through a joint initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, with support from the Libyan government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the 174 undocumented Bangladeshis, who voluntarily agreed to return home, arrived in Bangladesh on Tuesday morning on a Buraq Air flight from Tripoli, Libya.
Most of the returnees had entered Libya after being lured and assisted by human traffickers while attempting to reach Europe illegally by sea.
Many of them were reportedly abducted and tortured at different times during their stay in Libya.
Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant agencies, along with IOM representatives, welcomed the returnees at the airport.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged them to share their harrowing experiences to raise public awareness about the dangers of irregular migration and human trafficking.
IOM provided each returnee with transportation costs, food supplies, primary medical care and temporary accommodation, if needed.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and IOM are jointly working to ensure the safe repatriation of Bangladeshis held at various detention centres in Libya.
