The government plans to recruit 100,000 health workers in phases to address the manpower shortage in public healthcare services, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said on Wednesday (october 28).
Speaking at a meeting with expatriate Bangladeshis in Japan, he said the recruitment drive was part of the government's electoral pledges. Around 80 per cent of the recruits are expected to be women, providing primary healthcare, health advice and referral services at the grassroots level.
The government plans to recruit 45,700 workers in the 2026-27 fiscal year and 5,000 doctors through a special Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination.
Of the 65,230 approved field-level posts nationwide, 18,947 remain vacant, including 6,953 health assistant and 8,293 family welfare assistant posts. Meanwhile, 160 of the 230 posts at the Central Medical Stores Depot (CMSD) in Dhaka remain unfilled.
The staff shortage has severely disrupted routine healthcare services at district and upazila levels, according to a Health Ministry source.
