The government has initiated a project to install artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cameras along the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway to curb reckless driving and restore discipline on the vital highway connecting Dhaka with 21 southern districts.

The automated surveillance system is designed to detect traffic violations—such as speeding and dangerous overtaking—and issue automated traffic citations without requiring human intervention.

Out of the 55-kilometer-long expressway, nearly 35 kilometers fall within the jurisdiction of Munshiganj district. Traffic volume on the route surged significantly following the opening of the Padma Bridge, leading to an alarming rise in fatal accidents caused by high speeds and driver negligence.

According to statistics from the Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defense, at least 589 severe accidents occurred on the expressway between June 25, 2022, and October 25, 2026. These incidents claimed 152 lives and left at least 950 passengers and pedestrians injured.

Muhammed Shafiqul Islam, Deputy Assistant Director of Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defense, noted that driver fatigue, lack of awareness, excessive speed, risky overtaking, and disregard for traffic regulations remain the primary causes of accidents on this route.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam recently confirmed during an inspection in Munshiganj that a dedicated project has been undertaken to bring the entire expressway under AI surveillance. He added that work is underway to cover all national highways with AI technology, which will gradually be expanded to regional and district roads.

Syed Mohammad Akhtar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Padma Bridge North Police Station, highlighted that the automated prosecution system will compel drivers to adhere to speed limits.

Md. Mominul Islam, Sub-Divisional Engineer of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), added that while traditional CCTV cameras and speed signs are already active, AI-based continuous monitoring will significantly reduce accidents caused by abrupt U-turns, driver carelessness, and heavy winter fog.
