Prime Minister’s Political Assistant Rashed Khan has alleged that Jamaat-e-Islami has initiated secret contacts with India in an attempt to come to power.
He said, the Awami League previously pursued a policy of appeasing India to remain in power, and Jamaat is now following the same path. He also alleged that senior Jamaat leaders were holding secret meetings with officials of Indian intelligence agencies.
Rashed Khan made the remarks while speaking to journalists after exchanging greetings with local residents following Jumma prayers at the Old DC Court Jame Mosque in Jhenaidah on Friday.
Criticising Jamaat and the Awami League, Rashed Khan said, “According to the information I have received, Jamaat has already started liaising with India to come to power. Jamaat is now following the same policy of appeasing India that the Awami League pursued in the past.”
He further alleged that Jamaat leaders were trying to appease India by holding meetings with its intelligence agencies, adding that the people of Bangladesh had not taken the matter positively.
“If Jamaat believes that no such meetings took place, let them accept my challenge,” he said.
Commenting on the opposition's divisional long march from Dhaka to Khulna, Rashed Khan said the programme would pass through Gopalganj, Khulna, Jashore and Jhenaidah before concluding in Kushtia.
He said Jamaat leaders and activists had informed him that they would not hold any roadside rally in Gopalganj.
Questioning the decision, Rashed Khan said Jamaat claims to fear no one except Allah, yet it has decided not to hold any rally or public meeting in Gopalganj.
“Fearing the Awami League and avoiding a rally there cannot be acceptable. If they have moral courage, they should hold a rally in Gopalganj and prove their integrity,” he said.
Rashed Khan also alleged that Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar had held a secret meeting with officials of an Indian intelligence agency.
“I have information about such a meeting. Government intelligence agencies and investigative journalists also have information about it. However, many may not be able to disclose the matter for various reasons,” he said.
He added that several investigative journalists had met him over the issue and that he had shared all the information with them.
Earlier, Rashed Khan offered Jumma prayers at the Old DC Court Jame Mosque and exchanged greetings with local worshippers and residents.
District BNP President MA Majid, General Secretary Zahiduzzaman Mona, District Chhatra Dal General Secretary Shahriar Russell and former convener of Islami University Chhatra Dal Sahed Ahmed, among other BNP and affiliated organisation leaders, were present.
