Bangladesh's batting fragility remains a persistent concern

Bangladesh's recurring batting problems have once again come into focus after the hosts suffered another collapse against West Indies in the first Test, leaving the contest finely balanced at the end of the third day in Mirpur.

The numbers tell a familiar story. Bangladesh moved from 213 for three to 272 all out in their first innings, losing their final seven wickets for just 59 runs. After gaining a narrow 27-run advantage, they failed to build on it and ended Friday at 79 for six in their second innings.

The latest setback raises questions about the team's ability to convert promising positions into substantial totals, particularly in Test cricket, where partnerships and patience often determine the outcome.

Shadman Islam's century in the first innings offered Bangladesh a strong platform. But the lower order could not provide sufficient support, leaving Litton Das unbeaten on 34 as the innings ended well short of what the hosts might have expected from their position.

The second innings brought little improvement. Tanzid Hasan fell without scoring, while Shadman managed only 13. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 10 and Towhid Hridoy was dismissed for a duck. Litton and Mehidy Hasan Miraz also failed to make significant contributions.

West Indies exploited the weakness through disciplined spin bowling. Captain Roston Chase claimed three wickets, while Jomel Warrican added two, exposing Bangladesh's difficulty in responding when pressure increased.

The problem is not simply the loss of wickets. It is the inability to rebuild after setbacks and establish partnerships that can change the direction of an innings.

Bangladesh have often shown that individual batters can produce major scores, but the Mirpur Test has again highlighted the gap between individual achievement and collective batting performance.

The remaining four wickets now carry considerable responsibility. Bangladesh need to add as many runs as possible on the fourth morning to give their bowlers a realistic chance of defending a challenging target.

Beyond this match, the team management will need to examine why promising starts continue to end in disappointing totals.

Unless Bangladesh find a more reliable way to bat through difficult periods, their ambitions in Test cricket will remain vulnerable to the same recurring problem.
