Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has expressed concerns over discussions on expanding the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Bangladesh and Japan during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent visit to Tokyo.

Speaking at the inaugural rally of an 11-party alliance's Dhaka-Khulna-Kushtia long march on Saturday morning, he demanded transparency over the outcome of the Prime Minister's four-day Japan visit.

“Two days ago, the Prime Minister returned home after completing his four-day visit. The nation deserves to know why he went and what he achieved,” he said.

Referring to the proposed Matarbari deep-sea port project, he added, “The nation wants clarity on whether anything is being concealed regarding the port. Bangladesh must not be leased out to anyone in the name of connectivity.”

The rally was held at the south gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka. The long march is part of the alliance's campaign for seven demands, including implementation of the referendum verdict and justice for the July massacre.

Shafiqur Rahman warned that the movement would continue unless the government implemented the referendum verdict. He also accused the BNP of betraying public expectations and disregarding the referendum results.

He urged young people to prepare for a broader movement, saying another struggle might be necessary to safeguard the country's freedom.

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Oli Ahmed accused the government of turning various government offices and local government institutions into BNP offices.

He alleged that district offices, district councils, WASA, corporations, city corporations and municipalities had been politicised.
