The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) cleared the blockaded roads in Mirpur on Sunday afternoon, November 1, restoring traffic flow following hours of unrest staged by protesting readymade garment (RMG) workers.
Speaking to reporters after dispersing the crowds, DMP Joint Commissioner Mohidul Islam stated that law enforcement suspects anti-government or anti-state elements may have infiltrated the demonstration to destabilize law and order.
The DMP official noted that a minimum wage board has already been formed to address compensation issues and that officers attempted to explain the formal process to the workers. However, as protesters refused to clear the thoroughfares, police were forced to intervene to alleviate public suffering.
Situation Restored Following Sound Grenade Use
Joint Commissioner Mohidul Islam explained that adequate police forces deployed sound grenades to disperse the crowd and clear the streets. He asserted that no baton charges were used, no arrests were made, and no police personnel were injured during the clearing operation.
Addressing allegations that journalists were obstructed and had their mobile phones confiscated by officers during the operation, the DMP official assured that police were primarily focused on clearing the roads. He added that an investigation will be launched into any wrongdoing, and steps will be taken to recover any taken devices.
Traffic movement across Mirpur-10, 11, and 12 has returned to normal, though law enforcement remains on high alert to prevent further disruption. The clearing operation follows intense clashes earlier in the day, during which protesters blocked major intersections to demand a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000 and set fire to a police vehicle at Mirpur-11.
