Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed law enforcement agencies to ensure uninterrupted production at garment factories and protect people's lives and property amid ongoing unrest in the sector.
Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury disclosed the directive while briefing journalists after an emergency meeting between the prime minister, ministers and advisers at the Secretariat on Sunday night.
The minister said the government would politically tackle any attempt to create instability in the garment sector ahead of December.
He added that the prime minister had instructed law enforcement agencies to take necessary measures to maintain normal production at garment factories and ensure public safety.
Earlier, Tarique Rahman held an emergency meeting with ministers and advisers at the Secretariat on Sunday evening to discuss the ongoing workers' unrest and possible measures to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour and Employment published a gazette notification on Sunday announcing the formation of a minimum wage board to determine a new salary structure for garment workers.
According to the notification, ABM Shamsuddin, a director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), and Babul Akhtar, general secretary of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation (BGIWF), have been appointed as representatives of the owners and workers respectively.
Dr Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, a professor of Public Administration at Dhaka University, has been appointed as an independent member of the board.
Asif Ayub, joint secretary-general of the Bangladesh Employers' Federation, has been appointed as the employers' representative, while Anwar Hossain, president of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, will represent the workers.
The labour ministry said the newly formed board would hold a meeting as soon as possible to determine the revised wage structure.
