Fire Service and Civil Defence, in coordination with the Bangladesh Coast Guard, conducted a firefighting drill and awareness programme on Saint Martin’s Island on Wednesday to help prevent fire-related accidents during the tourist season.

Employees of hotels and resorts on the island received hands-on training in basic firefighting techniques and the proper use of firefighting equipment.

The programme was held at various hotels, resorts and tourist facilities on the island.

A Fire Service team led by Deputy Assistant Director Mohammad Idrich organised the drill, with members of the Coast Guard’s BCG Station Saint Martin’s participating.

Hotel and resort employees, along with local residents, were briefed on potential causes of fires, basic firefighting methods and the correct use of firefighting equipment. They were also instructed on how to respond quickly and safely without panicking during a fire.

Mohammad Idrich said the number of tourists on Saint Martin’s Island increases during the tourist season, making it important for hotel and resort staff to be prepared for emergencies.

He said the training focused on responding quickly to fires, using firefighting equipment properly and controlling fires at an early stage. Such training and awareness programmes would continue to help ensure the safety of tourists and local residents, he added.

Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said the force had been carrying out various public awareness activities alongside its law enforcement responsibilities in coastal and riverine areas.

He said the drill was organised in coordination with the Fire Service as part of those efforts.

The programme also aimed to assess the ability to take prompt and effective action during emergencies and improve preparedness for fire incidents, he added.

Sujon said similar activities would continue to help maintain a safe tourism environment on the island and protect the lives and property of tourists and local residents.
