Legal action will be taken against hotel owners and managers in Cox's Bazar if found providing rooms to underage individuals or couples without verifying National Identity Cards (NID), warned reserved seat Member of Parliament and Cox's Bazar District BNP General Secretary Advocate Shamim Ara Swapna on Saturday (October 24).

She made the remarks during a stakeholder meeting on ensuring safe tourism, organized by the Cox's Bazar district administration at the Shahid Subhash Auditorium of Cox's Bazar Institute and Public Library.

Addressing hotel and resort operators, Swapna raised concerns over underage girls staying at local hotels with partners without proper identification, stating that providing accommodations without NIDs violates the law and leads to tragic incidents, including homicides and suicides.

She stressed that while minors accompanying parents are permitted to stay, hotel authorities must strictly mandate NID verification for all other guests.

The warning comes following the death of a 13-year-old seventh-grade student from Cumilla, whose body was recovered on October 8. Prior to her death, the victim had stayed at a Cox's Bazar hotel with a partner under a false identity, where her age was recorded as 18 on the registration log.

Referring to the incident, Cox's Bazar Superintendent of Police A.N.M. Sajedur Rahman emphasized positive branding for the beach town, urging stakeholders to curb negative publicity that harms the local tourism industry.

Chaired by District Magistrate Mohammad Abdul Mannan, the meeting was also addressed by Cox's Bazar-3 MP Lutfur Rahman Kajal, alongside representatives from the Fire Service, Department of Environment, and local business leaders.

The administration's initiative follows recent tragedies in the district, including a fire at a Marine Drive resort on October 17 that claimed 10 lives, and the drowning of five tourists at Himchhari beach on October 21.
