The Democratic Rights Committee demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the death of garment worker Taufiq, who succumbed to his injuries after being brutally beaten during a workers’ protest in Gazipur over the demand for a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000.
The committee also expressed solidarity with the ongoing movement of garment workers, who have long faced multifaceted economic deprivation and are demanding a living wage to ensure a decent standard of living.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the committee expressed outrage over Taufiq’s death, accusing law enforcement personnel and alleged hired assailants of using violence to suppress a legitimate labour movement.
