Opposition Leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has called on the government to urgently revise the wage structure to address ongoing labour unrest in the country's garment sector.
"Saving the industry means saving the country. But it is equally true that saving workers means saving the industry," he said.
He made the remarks in a video message posted on Facebook on Wednesday
Shafiqur Rahman said garment workers in different parts of the country had been staging protests over wages, allowances and other demands over the past few days. Many factories have been shut down amid the unrest, while incidents of arson have also been reported in some areas.
He warned that any major disruption in the garment sector, the country's leading export-earning industry, could have serious consequences for the national economy.
Condemning the killing of Taufiq, a garment worker from Gaibandha, in Sreepur of Gazipur, the Jamaat chief called for a fair investigation and the swift identification and prosecution of those responsible.
