Tesla may be moving towards discontinuing production of its much-discussed electric pickup truck, the Cybertruck. CEO Elon Musk has indicated that the company may reduce or halt Cybertruck production at its factory in Texas, United States, next year.
However, he did not clarify whether production would be completely discontinued or shifted to another factory.
Musk said the move would make room for increased production of Tesla's self-driving vehicle, the Cybercab.
An indication that Cybertruck production could be completely discontinued also emerged from a statement by Wes Morrill, the project's chief engineer. In a post on social media platform X, he wrote, "Cybertruck was an incredible platform for technological innovation. That technological progress will continue through Cybercab."
Although the vehicle generated considerable excitement among Tesla's loyal fans, the project faced several delays before production began. It was eventually launched in 2023, but sales failed to grow as expected.
News of a possible production shutdown has disappointed many Tesla enthusiasts on social media. One user described the Cybertruck as "the best vehicle Tesla has ever made" and expressed regret over reports that production could end next year.
In response, Musk simply wrote, "True," agreeing with the user's comment. He added, "But the Cybertruck fleet will be on the roads for a long time."
The Cybertruck has always been one of Musk's pet projects. In March this year, he described the vehicle as "even more amazing than people think."
Earlier, in April, he also called it the best product Tesla had ever made.
However, questions have persisted over whether Musk's enthusiasm for the vehicle matches the interest of ordinary consumers. Analysts have long expressed doubts about its ability to establish a foothold in the highly competitive and lucrative US pickup truck market.
While its design and marketing have attracted considerable attention, its high price and various production challenges have also hindered its appeal to buyers.
When the Cybertruck was first unveiled publicly in 2019, Musk faced an embarrassing moment. During a demonstration intended to showcase the strength of the vehicle's windows, a Tesla engineer threw a metal ball at the glass on stage. Contrary to expectations, the window shattered upon impact.
The incident attracted widespread attention and created an awkward moment for the Cybertruck's promotional campaign.
Despite the setback, the vehicle continued to generate strong interest among potential buyers. In 2019, while the Cybertruck was still under development, Musk said the company had received 146,000 orders for the vehicle.
After a lengthy wait, the Cybertruck finally hit the market in 2023, retaining the unconventional design showcased at its unveiling. Its stainless-steel exterior and sharp, angular structure made it distinctly different from conventional pickup trucks.
The design generated excitement among Tesla fans. Many compared its appearance to vehicles from futuristic films, with some describing it as something straight out of the popular science-fiction film Blade Runner.
Critics, however, had a very different reaction. Many criticised its unusual design, with some even describing its appearance as outright ugly.
Alongside the design controversy, a series of technical problems also affected the Cybertruck's reputation. Tesla was forced to recall the vehicle several times.
In 2025, more than 46,000 Cybertrucks were recalled over concerns that an exterior trim component could detach from the vehicle.
Price has also been a major obstacle to expanding the vehicle's market reach. During a discussion with Wall Street analysts in 2023, Musk acknowledged that reducing production costs would be essential to making the Cybertruck affordable for ordinary buyers.
However, the vehicle's price eventually reached $61,000 with all available features and options, equivalent to approximately £48,000 at the time.
In 2026, the price of the high-performance Cyberbeast version of the Cybertruck has climbed further to $102,000.
