FIFA’s Appeal Chamber has delivered mixed rulings regarding disciplinary sanctions stemming from on-field altercations following a World Cup final, reducing defender Nahuel Molina’s suspension while upholding a 10-match ban for midfielder Leandro Paredes.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed the decisions on Friday (November 6) night.
Molina had initially been handed a seven-match ban and a 60,000 USD fine for punching Spain captain Rodri following Argentina's 1-0 defeat in the World Cup final. The appeal body reduced his suspension to four matches while maintaining the financial penalty.
Conversely, Boca Juniors midfielder Leandro Paredes saw his 10-match ban and 90,000 USD fine fully upheld. Paredes was sanctioned for shoving Eric Garcia during Spain's celebrations and subsequently knocking down Gavi.
In addition to Paredes' suspension, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee maintained a 321,000 USD fine imposed on Argentina for discriminatory chants.
The AFA stated that it intends to appeal Paredes' ban and the fine for discriminatory chanting at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), pending a formal request for the full written reasons behind the decisions. The association claims to possess sufficient factual and legal arguments to contest the rulings.
Earlier disciplinary actions from the incident included a one-match ban and 30,000 USD fine for Thiago Almada, alongside a three-match suspension and 30,000 USD fine for Roberto Ayala for punching Spain's Dani Olmo.
Argentina is scheduled to face Uruguay in Buenos Aires on November 13 during the upcoming FIFA international window, followed by a match against Costa Rica in Cordoba on November 17.
