BUET retains GPA requirements despite fewer HSC-5 achievers

Observer Online Report

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has decided to retain its previous admission eligibility criteria despite a sharp decline in GPA-5 achievers in this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations.

Applicants must secure at least GPA 4 in their Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations and GPA 5 in HSC, including A+ grades in physics, chemistry and higher mathematics.

Only 26,702 students from the science and home economics streams achieved GPA-5 this year.

Prof Kamrul Hasan, head of BUET's admission test committee, said the university would not relax the requirements and would allow only 10,000 candidates to sit the admission test.

Meanwhile, BUET will begin accepting undergraduate admission applications on November 21. The admission test is scheduled for January 16.

"We are proceeding with preparations to hold the admission test on Jan 16," Kamrul told bdnews24.com on Saturday (November 7).

The application deadline will be announced later.

The decision comes amid preparations by the Education Ministry to arrange December retake examinations for students who failed one or two HSC subjects. BUET and Dhaka University have decided to continue with their admission schedules despite the retake arrangements.
