Abdul El-Sayed, elected as Michigan's first Muslim senator, has formed a political action committee (PAC) named ‘Habibi’ following his victory in the November 3 US elections.
According to Al Jazeera, Federal Election Commission records identify Habibi PAC as a leadership PAC sponsored by El-Sayed.
Political action committees are organisations that raise and spend money to support political candidates. A leadership PAC, however, operates separately from a politician's own election campaign.
‘Habibi’ is an Arabic word meaning ‘my beloved’ or ‘my dear’. El-Sayed frequently used the term during his election campaign, including in his victory speech, when he addressed US Vice President JD Vance as ‘Habibi’.
“JD, Habibi, the great irony is that constitutionally, you are obligated to swear me in this coming January,” El-Sayed said in his victory speech.
El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian immigrants, defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers, from President Donald Trump's party, in the November 3 election.
Before the election, Trump and Vance publicly criticised El-Sayed and called him a ‘jihadist’ without providing evidence.
Referring to the criticism, El-Sayed said after his victory that Vance, who had been so critical of him during the campaign, would now be required to administer his oath of office.
