Tanore takes initiative to save birds

RAJSHAHI, Feb 24: To protect different species of local birds, Tanore upazila (UZ) authority has taken an exceptional initiative. The trees on the upazila parishad premises are now filled up with earthen pots, so that the birds can easily make their abodes.   
Omar Faruk Chowdhury, MP of Rajshahi-1 (Tanore-Godagari), inaugurated the initiative while about 150 earthen pots were hung with those trees. The area has been declared as sanctuary of birds while Upazila Nirbahi Office (UNO) Shawkat Ali is pledged bound to protect local birds to make the environment comfortable.    The initiative has been welcomed by the wildlife experts and general people of the area while the upazila parishad premises becomes more attractive to see with hanging pots on trees, said some local people.  
Shariful Islam, assistant engineer of BMDA Tanore zone, said that the status of the upazila has increased for taking such initiative and general people were very cordially welcoming it. All of them were, especially expressing their thanks to the UNO. 
Bidhan Chandra Das, professor of Zoology Department of Rajshahi University, said "For protecting wildlife, such type of initiative will inspire others to protect it and make our environment balanced".  
Wildlife specialists said that the initiative of hanging earthen pots not only attract birds to make nest but also attract bees which will also bring boon to the environment. Besides, the upazila authority should plant some more trees like Banyan trees and Fig trees which are suited for birds to make nest.
UNO Shawkat Ali said, "At the very first phase we have hung about 150 pots in 10 trees. We are planning to increase the quantity of pots on the trees outside of the upazila parishad premises".
