FENI, Mar 8: The Feni Government College is plagued with different problems including teacher and classroom shortage. As a result, the academic and administrative activities here are facing setback.
The college started it journey in 1922 with few students and teachers which was nationalised in 1979. Now, around 22 thousand students are studying at the college.
College sources said, currently honours course in 15 subjects, masters (preliminary) course in 10 subjects and masters (final) course in nine subjects are running at the college.
At present, there are 64 teachers against the total 152 and the rest 88 posts are going vacant. The current teacher-student ratio at the college is 1:344.
Against 12 teachers for each subject at honours and masters courses, there are only four teachers at present.
Besides, there is acute shortage of classroom. For each subject, there are only two classrooms. So, it is not possible to take classes of all courses once at a time.
On the other hand, classes cannot be taken regularly since different public examinations are taken round the year.
An honours class student Abdur Rahim said, "We cannot complete our syllabus as different public exams are taken round the year."
There is no science building at the college and so the academic and administrative activities are run at arts building.
Though there is a library at a much old and derelict building at the college, there is not enough space. During the rainy season, water enters the library, damaging the books and other resources.
A masters class student Abu Yusuf said, there are not enough space and necessary research items at the library.
The only hostel, which is around two kilometres away from the campus, can accommodate only 100 students.
There is not transport facility for the students. Two one-storied hostels and a residence for principal on the college campus have been left abandoned for long. There is no dormitory for the teachers.
In this connection, Principal of Feni Government College Professor Abul Kalam Azad said, "We should remove all the obstacles if we want to ensure quality education. It is extremely necessary to ensure the infrastructures at the college."
