Pea fetches profit for Baghmara farmers

RAJSHAHI, Mar 9: The farmers in Baghmara upazila here have become self-reliant as they got much profit through pea cultivation over the last several years.
They are showing more interest in its cultivation after getting repeated bumper production with fair market price. As a result, the cultivation of pea-pod is increasing day by day here.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in the upazila, the farmers cultivated pea on 40 hectares of land this year which was only 20 ha in the previous year.
The farmers are becoming more interested in pea cultivation for its low production cost and easy cultivation method.
The price of pea is high in the markets with huge demand. The farmers brought more lands under pea farming at Goalkandi union in the upazila. Besides, the farmers at Horitkursa union and Taherpur and Bhavaniganj municipalities have cultivated pea in their land, source added.
While talking to The Daily Observer, farmer Abdul Mazid of Ramroma village in the upazila said, "I cultivated pea on one and a half bigha of lands this season and became economically benefited. I will cultivate more lands in the next year."
Monjur Rahman and Azad of Sazuria village and Saiful Islam of Ramroma village said, "We cultivated pea on around two-bigha lands this year and got bumper production with fair price. We have become economically benefited."
They further said, "Farmers can harvest pea within 70 days of seeding and can achieve 30 to 35 maunds of pea in per bigha of land. In the early stages of the season, per kilogram pea was being sold at Tk 200."
Ibrahim Hossain, a wholesaler of Taltoli Bazar in the upazila said. "I supply pea to Karwan Bazar and Jatrabari of capital Dhaka every week. Besides, wholesalers from other areas come here to buy pea."
Akbar Hossen, a wholesaler of Natore, who came to Baghmara to buy pea, said, "I supply pea to different districts after buying from here."
