Tanore farmers eye bumper litchi production

RAJSHAHI, Mar 10: Growers here are expecting a bumper production of litchi as most of the trees have sprouted massively by dint of a suitable climatic condition in Tanore upazila.
 While visiting some of the litchi-producing areas recently, this correspondent found that the growers were very busy taking care of their trees with hope of getting more yield.
Most of the litchi trees in the upazila are adorned with golden-yellow colour of buds. Farmers are very much careful and passing their busy days for taking care of the flowers. Few of the trees are seen with tender litchi. Farmers are hoping to get good profit this year from litchi cultivation.
According to Upazila Agriculture Office sources, a total of 70 hectares of land have been brought under litchi gardens this year, but they have not estimated amount of production yet. If the weather goes well, the litchi production will be double from the last year's, he informed.
Though the buds didn't come to light in the right time, but now all the trees have blossomed. It was seen that the more buds are in middle and small category trees than big trees. The wind also gives the fresh scent of buds which brings boon to the face of farmers for a better production this year.
Abdus Salam, farmer of Belpukuria village of the upazila, said "Very good weather condition exists now, and the temperature is also very good. So we are expecting a better production". But if the temperature goes high that will be a big setback for the production.
Another farmer of the upazila Abdur Rahim said, "Seeing the buds in the litchi trees we are very happy. Before budding, we took care of the trees by giving fertilisers, water and cleaning the
garden".
"This area's litchis are very testy for the reason of this area's soil which is very much favourable for litchi cultivation", Abdur Rahim also said.
Shafiqul Islam, upazila agriculture officer, said, "The farmers are being instructed to take care of the garden as well as buds. Anthrax is the most common disease for litchi trees this time, so the farmers are being advised to spray related medicine in the trees."
