
RAJSHAHI, Mar 25: The cultivation of onion seed has brought bright prospect for the farmers in Godagari upazila here as they have achieved a good profit by selling their produce during the last several years.
So they are more interested in onion seed cultivation in their lands across the upazila here. Now they are passing very busy time in taking care of onion fields. The farmers are going to achieve a bumper onion seed production in the current year.
Farmers said that the grade of the cultivated onion seed in the area is very high. That's why the demand of this onion seed has already increased, and the produce are being transported to different areas of the country. Each kilogram of seed would be sold at Tk 1,000 to 2,500, they added.
During a recent visit, this correspondent found that the onion farmers are passing very busy time at their fields in Hamirkursa, Sajuria, Goalkandi, Kanopara, Shreepur, Modhhopara, Telipukur of Jogipara union. The growth of onion is very well and they are hopping a bumper seed production with fair market price in this year.
The upazila office of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources said that the farmers here have brought more land under onion seed cultivation in this year than previous year. They have cultivated 55 hectares of lands in different areas of the upazila.
Talking to the Daily Observer, Lutfor Rahman of Telipukur village of Goalkandi union said that he cultivated 2.5 bighas of land in the current season. The farmers here are showing more interest in onion seed cultivation witnessing high demand with fair price in the last year. He used pesticide and fertiliser in right time according to advice given by the agriculture officers.
He would achieve a bumper onion seed production in this year as onion plants are growing very well amid favourable weather. He got a bumper production with fair market price and become economically benefitted in the last year, he added.
Muzibur Rahman of the same village said that the farmers here are very much interested in onion seed cultivation as they have got a fair price in the markets in the last year. If the farmers take proper care of the plants, then they will be able to get a bumper output from the lands. The per bigha cultivation cost is about Tk 40,000 to 45,000.
They can produce around 70 to 90 kilogram of onion seeds from per bigha of land in the current year. A farmer can earn profit Tk 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh. For this reason, he is more interested in onion cultivation, he added.
Azgor Ali of Modhhopara village under Jogipara union said that he has cultivated onion seed on 10 kathas of land for the first time this season. Now he is passing very busy time in taking care of the onion plants. He is expecting a bumper onion seed production in this year.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Sabina Begum said that the farmers here have brought more lands under the onion seed cultivation this season, following the bumper production and fair price in the markets.
The farmers here are able to produce a good quantity of high-grade onion seed as the agriculture officers give right suggestion in right time, the officer added.
