A young girl committed
suicide during her turmeric ceremony (haldi ceremony) reportedly after being harassed to pay
dowry at Patiya upazila in
Chattogram district on Thursday.
Deceased Rima Akter, 20, was a resident of Hira Gazi area under Haidgaon union of the upazila and a honours first year student of Patiya Government College.
The victim's family members alleged that Rima took that type of decision after being pressurized by her fiance to pay dowry.
They said that Rima was supposed to be got married with one banker Morshedur Rahman on Friday. Earlier, the family members of bridegroom demanded Tk 2,00,000 as dowry money which was paid after some days. Recently, they have demanded some furnitures as dowry. Following this, Rima and her fiance had an argument on the day of turmeric ceremony.
Immediately after the altercation, Rima rushed to her room and hanged herself with the ceiling fan, locking the room from inside. After getting no response for while, family members saw her hanging when they peaked through ventilator.
Relatives rescued her and took to Patiya Upazila Health Complex where the physicians referred her to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, but she breathed her last after one hour of admission.
She wrote a suicide note which said,"I can't take this much pain anymore. I could not enjoy the rest of my life beautifully and now I am unable to take your pain even today. Pay back the dowry money which was given to you by my family."
Confirming the matter, Patiya Police Station officer-in-charge Jasim Uddin said the victim's father lodged a case in this connection and legal actions will be taken in this regard.
