Tajul Islam, has been placed on a 9-day
remand in connection with the
murder case of Chhatra Dal leader Nayan.
Brahmanbaria Chief Judicial Magistrate
Court granted the remand on Wednesday afternoon.
Tajul Islam was presented before the court by Detective Branch (DB) of police in the afternoon while SI Sohel Ahmed of the district DB police requested a 10-day remand for thorough investigation of the case.
During the hearing, the defense lawyers attempted to seek bail and cancel the remand, but they were reportedly harassed by the plaintiff's lawyers and had to leave the courtroom.
Following the hearing, Chief Judicial Magistrate Sadequl Rahman granted a 9-day remand.
According to the case statement, on November 19, 2022, when a clash erupted between BNP activists and police during distribution of leaflets for a public meeting in Cumilla. During the clash, police fired rubber bullets, hurled sound grenade and tear shells, injuring seven BNP-Chhatra Dal members.
Among the injured, Union Chhatra Dal Vice President Nayan was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The following day, on November 20, former SI Afsal Hossain Khan of Bancharampur Police Station filed a case, naming 17 BNP activists and leaders, accusing them of obstructing and attacking police officers. During the investigation, Tajul Islam was identified as an unidentified accused and was arrested on Tuesday (August 20), from the Banasree area in Dhaka.
AKM Kamruzzaman Mamun, the lawyer of the victim, expressed satisfaction with the court's decision.
