Rail communications between Sylhet and the rest of the country have been suspended due to rising water levels in the Khoai River, which threatens to submerge the Shayestaganj railway bridge in Habiganj district.

The suspension was announced on Thursday, through a statement signed by Saifullah Riyad, Senior Sub-Assistant Engineer (Track) of Bangladesh Railway in Shayestaganj.

As a result, six trains operating between Sylhet and Dhaka and Chattogram have been halted.

Shayestaganj Junction station master Gour Prasad Das Palash said that rail communication in Sylhet region will remain suspended until further notice.

He further explained, "Due to heavy rainfall, the water level of the Khoai River in Habiganj has risen above the danger level. The water level  is dangerously close to 'Khoai Bridge' on the Sylhet-Dhaka-Chattogram rail route. Due to concerns about potential damage to the bridge, authorities have decided to suspend rail services as a precautionary measure."
