A murder case was lodged against 28 people over killing of a madrasah student in Chattogram city on March 26, 2021.

The victim student Rafiqul Islam's father Abdul Jabbar filed the case with Hathazari Police Station on Friday.

The accused include the chairman of Bangladesh Tarikat Federation and former Member of Parliament (MP) for Chattogram-2 constituency Syed Najibul Bashar Maizbhandari, former Superintendent of Police (SP) in the district SM Rashidul Haque and officer-in-charge (OC) of Hathazari Police Station Md Rafiqul Islam in connection with the death of a madrasa student in Hathazari, Chattogram, in 2021.

Hathazari Police Station's current officer-in-charge, Md Moniruzzaman, confirmed that 28 individuals have been explicitly named in the case, with an additional 150 unidentified individuals also listed as accused.

According to the case statement, the incident occurred on March 26, 2021, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Dhaka to participate in golden jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh's independence. In protest of Modi’s visit, Hefazat-e-Islam activists and madrasa students organized a procession from Al Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Moinul Islam-Hathazari in Chattogram, mirroring protests across the country.

During the demonstration, Rafiqul Islam and four other students were fatally shot.
