The hanging body of a student from Haji Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) was recovered from a hostel in Dinajpur on Saturday.
The deceased Suraiya Akter, was daughter of Abdul Kuddus and hailed from Mubarakpur village in Patnitala Upazila in Naogaon. She was a fourth-year student of Agriculture faculty in the university.
Suraiya found hanging from a ceiling fan in a second-floor room at Achia Girls' Hostel near the university, according to the police.
The hostel owner, Md. Liton Mia, mentioned that his three-story hostel accommodates around 60 residents, with 45 to 50 students staying regularly. Suraiya resided in room 207 on the second floor, where each room is designated for a single occupant.
According to him, Suraiya was seen and spoken to by other boarders as late as 9:30 PM on Friday night. After the housemaid served dinner, Suraiya was not seen again. When the maid went to collect cooking supplies at noon Saturday, she found the door locked from the inside. Other girls peered through a window, recording a video with a phone, which showed Suraiya hanging from the ceiling fan. The authorities were then notified.
Dinajpur Kotwali Police Station sub-inspector Selimur Rahman confirmed that Suraiya's body was recovered and sent to M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
An inquest report was prepared, revealing that she had a scarf wrapped around her neck. The police have contacted her family, and further legal actions will be taken after discussions with them, added the police official.
