Police have arrested a man on charges of raping a indigenous teen girl in Dinajpur's Ghoraghat upazila.
The accused, Anil Beshra, 55, a resident of Belwa village in Palsha union, was taken into custody late Sunday night after the victim's mother, Silina Mardi, filed a case at Ghioraghat Police Station.
According to the case statement, the accused and the victim’s family were from the same neighborhood, which allowed Anil frequent access to their home. Over time, he began to make inappropriate advances towards the girl, promising various incentives. On February 7, 2024, Anil entered the victim's house around 9 AM under the pretext of having tea. Finding the girl alone, he forcibly raped her. After the incident, the victim, who was crying, was threatened by the accused to keep quiet about the assault.
The abuse continued multiple times against the victim's will. Eventually, when the girl fell ill, she was taken to a hospital where it was discovered that she was seven months pregnant.
Upon learning the full details from the victim, the victim's mother filed the rape case with the police station.
Confirming the arrested, Ghoraghat Police Station officer-in-charge Asaduzzaman Asad said the accused was sent to jail following a court order and further legal action will be taken based on the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, the victim was sent to a hospital for medical check-up, added the OC.
