Two individuals have died following their arrest in a joint forces operation at Saghata upazila in Gaibandha district.
Though the victim's relatives claimed the deaths resulted from torture, but police calimed the duo died due to their health complications.
The deceased were Sohrab Hossain Apel, 35, son of Rostam Ali, and Shafiqul Islam, 45, son of Malek Uddin, both from Gobindi area in the upazila.
The arrests took place on September 9 during an operation in the upazila, leading to detention of five individuals, including local Union Parishad Chairman Mosharraf Hossain Sweet, 45. After their arrest, all five detainees reportedly fell ill and were taken to a local hospital.
Later, two were transferred to specialized hospitals where they died: Shafiqul in Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Sohrab in Gaibandha General Hospital.
Dr. Asifur Rahman, a medical officer of Gaibandha General Hospital, mentioned that while there were injuries but the actual reason behind the death of Sohrab is yet to be ascertained.
Gaibandha Police official Ibn Mizan stated that the detainees became panicked after arrest, which contributed to their deteriorating health. The remaining three are currently recovering.
