Two individuals were arrested in connection with the killing of a central leader of Bangladesh Swechasebak Dal in Gopalganj and subsequently sent to jail on Saturday.
The arrested are Alimuzzaman Chowdhury, 50, and Cesar Sheikh, 42, residents of Ghonapara in Sadar upazila.
Confirming the matter, Gopalganj Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Anisur Rahman said the arrests were made on suspicion of their involvement in the incident and both were sent to jail following a court order.
Earlier, on Friday evening, the victim Shawkat Ali Didar, Sports Secretary of central Bangladesh Swechasebak Dal, was killed during a clash between the activists of BNP and Awami League. The clash erupted at Ghonapara as BNP members, returning from a street rally in Bedgram, were accused of tearing down banners and festoons of the Awami League. This led to a violent altercation, involving chase and counter-chase between the two groups.
The clashes left Shawkat Ali Didar dead and over 40 others were injured, including central Bangladesh Swechasebak Dal President S.M. Jilani and his wife, Gopalganj District Jatiotabadi Mohila Dal president Rowshan Ara Ratna.
