A youth was hacked to death over allegedly over a football match at Santhia upazila in Pabna district on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Ariful Islam, 24, son of Shahadat Sheikh, a resident of Chatkabarat village under Kashinathpur union of the upazila.
Since the incident, a tense situation has been prevailing in the area and locals are fearing that violent clashes may have take place in the area following the killing.
A case was filed by the victim's mother at Santhia Police Station.
According to locals and case statement, an altercation took place between the villagers of Gopalpur village and Dwariapur village under Aminpur upazila over a football match on September 19. Following the altercation, a group of the victim's rivals attacked Ariful with sharp weapons when he was talking to others, leaving critically injured.
Relatives rescued him and took him to Pabna Sadar Hospital where the physicians referred him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated. He then, succumbed to his injuries around 8 PM on Sunday while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Santhia Police Station officer-in-charge Anwar Hossain confirmed the incident, adding that efforts are underway to arrest the involved individuals.
