Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested an alleged gold smuggler along with 19 pieces of gold bars weighing four kilograms from Benapole frontier area on Tuesday.
Mahafuz Molla, 29, son of late Hasmat Molla from Bardia village in Narail district, was arrested from Amrakhali BGB checkpoint on the Benapole-Jashore highway on Tuesday morning. He was traveling on a passenger bus when the BGB conducted a search and found the large consignment of gold.
Lt. Col. Saifullah Siddiqui, commander of Jashore-49 BGB Battalion, confirmed the matter in a press release at 4 PM.
Acoording to the press release they had received a tip-off about a large gold shipment being transported from Jashore to Benapole by bus. Acting on the information, a BGB team conducted a search at Amrakhali checkpoint and discovered 19 small and large gold bars in the possession of a passenger.
The total weight of the bars was four kilograms, with an estimated value of 4 crore 61 lakh taka.
A case has been filed and the arrested individual has been handed over to Benapole Port Police Station for further legal proceedings, added the press release.
