A housewife was reportedly raped and strangled to death after being lured by a job offer at Kaliganj upazila in Gazipur district.
The victim, Fatema Khatun Shaila, 23, from the same upazila, went missing which led to filing of a General Diary (GD) five days later at Kaliakair Police Station (GD number 379).
Following the GD, three days later, a decomposed body of an unidentified woman was discovered in a forested area of Mirertek under Nagari union in the upazila. A passport-sized photo, a scarf, and a pair of shoes found near the body helped the family identify the deceased as the missing Fatema Khatun Shaila.
Kaliganj police then started investigating, eventually arresting Md. Abdul Majid Mia, 42, on Wednesday from Kamrangirchar in Dhaka. Majid later confessed to his crime in a Gazipur court on Thursday.
According to Majid's confession, he had raped Shaila by luring her with a job opportunity. To prevent the crime from being exposed, he strangled her with a scarf and concealed her body. He then went into hiding.
Kaliganj Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md. Alauddin shared these details during a press conference on Friday.
Kaliganj Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Asaduzzaman, and Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Anwar Hossain PPM were present at the press conference.
The arrested Abdul Majid Mia, is from Raghunathpur village under Atgharia Police Station in Pabna district. He had been residing in Board Mill area of Kaliakair upazila. Majid was also the uncle-in-law of the deceased Fatema Khatun Shaila. The victim Shaila was daughter of Md. Ebad Ali from Agpunguli village under Faridpur Police Station in Pabna and wife of Md. Rubel Khandaker from the same area.
