Jubo League man arrested over 'killing wife' in Ctg

An activist of Jubo League was arrested by police reportedly after he butchered his wife and took his own mother hostage for five hours at Chandanaish upazila in Chattogram.

The incident occurred on Monday at Syedabad village under the upazila.

Citing locals, police said Md Jamir Uddin Chowdhury, a member of Chandanaish Jubo League, killed his wife, 35-year-old Beauty Akhtar, on Monday afternoon. Hearing the victim's scream, her mother-in-law, Shamsun Nahar,  rushed to the room to rescue her. At that time, when neighbours came forward, Jamir took the mother hostage by putting a knife to her throat for five hours. At one point, when locals attempted to apprehend him, he even hit his mother on the head with the knife.

Confirming the matter, Chandanaish Police Station officer-in-charge Imran Al Hossein said the mother was freed and Jamir was arrested and brought to the station around 10PM.

The OC said that Jamir killed his wife in their room. Shamsun Nahar rushed to the room when she heard her daughter-in-laws screams. He then detained her by putting the knife to her throat.

The situation is being investigated and legal actions will be taken later, added the OC.
