Energy Advisor Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan on Friday announced that a total of 19 new gas wells will be drilled in Bhola by 2028.

Five wells are set to be drilled by 2025, with an additional 14 wells planned between 2026 and 2028, aiming to boost the region's gas supply.

During his visit to Bhola's Ilisha-1 gas field, Fawzul Kabir explained that these projects will be awarded through open competitive bidding, ensuring the selection of the best proposals.

Responding to questions, the advisor told that commercial gas is currently available in Bhola but the decision to extend gas connections to households will be determined nationally. If anyone has paid for a gas connection but has not yet received it, they will be reimbursed.

He highlighted the importance of domestic gas discovery for the economy, stating, "We currently import LNG worth Tk 6,000 crore. If Bhola's gas resources prove to be substantial, it could reduce our need for imported LNG significantly."

He also addressed the potential for gas-based industries in Bhola, stating that he would encourage the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) and Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) to explore the establishment of industrial zones in the region. This would bring job opportunities and other benefits to the local population.

Discussing efficient use of Bhola's gas reserves, Fawzul Kabir shared plans to establish additional gas-based power plants, optimizing the utility of discovered gas resources.

Top officials, including the secretary of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, secretary of the Power Division, and chairman of Petrobangla, were present at the event.
