Police have identified the woman whose dismembered body was found in Savar on Monday night, and detained the victim's husband in connection with the incident.

The victim, identified as Shantana, 35, was allegedly murdered by her husband, Nayan, over suspicions of infidelity, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle) for Dhaka District Shahinur Kabir.

In a briefing on Tuesday, Shahinur Kabir said, "Nayan had brought Shantana to Savar seven months ago, leaving her first husband, Jahurul, in Tangail's Mirzapur. Shantana's 15-year-old daughter lives with Jahurul. Nayan also has a prior wife and three children."

"Nayan frequently suspected that Shantana was involved with other men, which led to repeated disputes and ultimately to this violent act. Following the disputes, Nayan killed his wife and dismembered her naked body into four parts in an attempt to hide the evidence," he said.

Kabir elaborated that the couple had frequent conflicts since moving to Savar's Birulia area. Shantana had recently called her mother, saying, "Nayan always suspects me and beats me. If you tell anyone, he might kill me."

Nayan, upon discovering Shantana's call to her mother, became enraged. When Shantana stormed out of the house, Nayan followed her to the area near Setu Nursery in Dattapara, where the murder took place.

Police have recovered a blood-stained machete as evidence. The victim's head and hands were severed and the clothing was removed to prevent identification. The dismembered remains and Nayan's pair of sandals were found nearby.

The victim's sister has filed a murder case and the investigation will continue to identify any other individuals involved.

Earlier, on Monday night, locals reported a headless, naked body in Dattapara, prompting police to investigate. The severed head and hands were later found wrapped in plastic about 150 yards away. Using mobile tracking technology, the police arrested Nayan on Tuesday morning.

Shantana was the daughter of late Sabon Ali from Baliya in Dhamrai Upazila, while Nayan hails from Moishagora village in Tangail's Mirzapur. The couple lived in a rented house in Dattapara where Nayan worked as a mason and Shantana was a homemaker.

Shantana's sister, Parul, shared, "My sister has a daughter in ninth grade. Nayan manipulated her. She left her happy home and ran away with him. A spiritual healer even warned us that Nayan would harm her. Today, that warning came true. We demand justice."

Savar Model Police Station's officer-in-charge Jewel Mia, confirmed that the body has been sent for autopsy.
The accused, Nayan, will be presented in court on Wednesday. The investigation remains ongoing to ensure all responsible parties are brought to justice.
