A court in Rangpur has acquitted 17 Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists in a case stemming from charges of creating unrest with the aim of toppling the government in 2015.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Krishna Kanto Roy of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 on Monday afternoon.

The acquitted individuals, who were present in court during the ruling, faced charges that date back to a police raid on the Ashiq Hostel in Rangpur city on May 26, 2015. Kotwali Thana police had arrested 17 Jamaat-Shibir activists during the raid.

The acquitted include Moudud Hossain of Pirgachha upazila, Motaleb Hossain and Mikail Anwar of Mithapukur upazila, and Shariful Islam of Gangachara upazila in Rangpur. Following an investigation, police filed a charge sheet against the accused, bringing the case to trial.

The court’s decision to acquit came after hearing testimony from three witnesses and arguments from both the prosecution and defense. Advocate Zoynal Abedin, representing the defendants, argued that the activists were unjustly implicated in a politically motivated case. He further stated that during the years under what he described as the "fascist" Awami League regime, people lacked freedom and access to unbiased justice due to alleged political interference in the judiciary.

Abedin also noted that the acquittal comes in the context of the recent Student-People Uprising of 2024, which, according to him, marked a turning point in the country’s governance and judicial independence.
