Police have arrested a youth accused of fatally stabbing his friend to death over an unpaid debt in Savar.
The accused Rony Pramanik, 26, was apprehended on Tuesday with the weapon used in the murdera rusty steel pair of scissorsfollowing a police operation in Pabna district.
The incident took place on the night of November 8 in the Aminbazar union of Savar.
According to police, Rony stabbed his friend, Mukhtar Hossain, 34, due to a dispute over a loan of Tk 1,500. The altercation occurred in an open area near an autorickshaw garage in Borodeshi Paschimpara neighborhood.
Mukhtar, originally from Muradnagar in Cumilla district, worked as a bus helper in Dhaka and lived in a rented house in the same area as the accused. Rony, hailing from Pabna's Bera upazila, was also a tenant in the same locality.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle) Shahinur Kabir said, "Roni admitted during preliminary questioning that he killed Mukhtar over the unpaid loan. The victim's wife, Sahanaz Akter, filed a murder case at Savar Model Police Station, which initiated the investigation."
Under the supervision of DIG Ahmad Muyid, a special team led by officer-in-charge Md. Jewel Mia, Sub-Inspector Faisal Alam and their associates tracked the suspect using digital technology. They conducted a raid at Aminpur in Pabna and arrested Rony near a tea shop at Raghunathpur Mor on Tuesday, he said.
During the raid, police recovered the steel scissors used in the murder. Rony has confessed to the crime and is now in custody. He has been charged in the murder case and will face further legal proceedings, added SP Shahinur.
