Daulatdia River Police in Rajbari's Goalanda upazila have seized and destroyed 4 lakh square meters of illegal fishing nets worth approximately Tk 24 lakh during a special operation in the Padma River.

The operation was conducted on Wednesday (November 26) and confirmed via a press release on Wednesday by Daulatdia River Police Outpost officer-in-charge Imran Hossain Tuhin.

The raid, led by Sub-Inspector Md. Abdul Jalil Biswas, took place between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, targeting various locations in the Padma-Jamuna confluence. The police retrieved approximately 80,000 meters of fishing nets, each 5 meters wide, covering a total area of 400,000 square meters.

OC Imran Hossain Tuhin said, "The illegal nets were recovered from the Padma River during our patrol, based on secret information. In the presence of the Goalanda Upazila Fisheries Officer and local witnesses, the nets were publicly burned to ensure they can no longer be used for illegal fishing."

The operation is part of an ongoing effort to curb the use of illegal 'current nets', a prohibited type of fishing net that poses significant threats to aquatic life and disrupts the ecosystem.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to preventing illegal fishing activities in the region.
