Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. Sakhawat Hossain, Adviser for Shipping and Labor Affairs, has asserted that Bangladesh is the most secular country in South Asia.

Dr. Sakhawat made the remark on Monday while addressing journalists during the passing-out parade of cadets at Barisal Marine Academy.

He also addressed recent controversies surrounding certain incidents, emphasizing that the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has clarified its non-involvement in the matter. He added that leaders of the Hindu community have also acknowledged the same. Dr. Sakhawat remarked that those who initiated the controversy have realized their isolation. He pledged to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future.

Regarding development initiatives, Dr. Sakhawat stated that several projects are underway and expected to be completed by December.

On election matters, he refrained from making specific comments, emphasizing that such decisions rest with the Election Commission. He urged patience, allowing the commission to organize itself and announce an election roadmap independently.

As the chief guest at the passing-out parade, Dr. Sakhawat highlighted the growing global demand for skilled marine professionals. He emphasized the relevance of increasing the number of marine academies in Bangladesh, noting that graduates from these institutions are employed on international vessels and contribute significantly to the nation's economy through foreign exchange earnings.

The event began with a parade by the cadets, followed by an awards ceremony where Dr. Sakhawat honored outstanding cadets. A celebratory cake-cutting marked the conclusion of the training program.

Notable attendees included Captain SM Atikur Rahman, Commandant of Barisal Marine Academy; Mohammad Yusuf, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping; Raihan Kauser, Divisional Commissioner of Barisal; DIG Manjur Morshed Alam; Metropolitan Police Commissioner Shafiqul Islam; and Deputy Commissioner Delwar Hossain.
