More than 50 people were injured in a violent clash between residents of Maharajpur and Mochna unions in Gopalganjs Muksudpur upazila on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning near Banogram Bazar adjacent to Maharajpur Union Parishad office, reportedly over a dispute involving the illegal occupation of government land for building shops.
According to locals, tensions began when one Shawkat Sikdar and his associates from Aikdia village in Mochna union attempted to construct shops on government land near Banogram Bazar. This was met with strong resistance from residents of Maharajpur Union, leading to a series of chases and counter-chases that escalated into a full-blown clash. Armed with makeshift weapons, residents from both unions engaged in the conflict starting at 9 AM.
The confrontation, which lasted over five hours, turned areas such as Banogram, Aikdia and their surroundings into battlegrounds.
Law enforcement eventually brought the situation under control by deploying additional personnel, but the fighting persisted until reinforcements arrived.
At least 40 people were admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, Muksudpur Hospital and Rajair Hospital in Madaripur for treatment. Others sought medical care at private clinics.
Muksudpur Police Station officer-in-charge Mostafa Kamal confirmed the incident and said that the situation is now under control. Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to prevent further violence.
