A 'beggar rehabilitation program' launched by the Upazila Social Welfare Department and under the initiative of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Shakil Ahmed.
Through the new initiative, Tota Mia, a beggar who had been struggling to make ends meet with his wife and children through begging, started his new journey to become an entrepreneur. Tota Mia was provided with a shop and essential goods to kickstart his new livelihood.
The handover of these materials was done by the UNO Md. Shakil Ahmed, with the presence of the Upazila Social Welfare Officer, Mahfuz Ibn Ayub.
Tota Mia, shared his thoughts on the new chapter in his life saying, "Begging is a shameful thing and though I knew this, I had no choice. It comes with humiliation and disgrace. But from now, I will change my life."
UNO Md. Shakil Ahmed explained, "Our goal is to help every beggar transform their helpless hands into productive ones. Begging is never a desirable profession and we are determined to eliminate this through the rehabilitation program. We aim to provide employment opportunities for every beggar like Tota Mia, so they can live with dignity and self-sufficiency."
Under the rehabilitation initiative, several other beggars in the area were also provided with new livelihoods. Among them, auto-rickshaws were given to Mokmina Khatun, Amina Khatun, and Abul Kashem.
Additionally, cows were provided to Anisur Rahman and Helena Begum.
The Social Welfare Department's rehabilitation program remains ongoing, aiming to provide sustainable livelihoods and a better future for those previously dependent on begging.
