Pregnant woman found dead in M'singh, family alleges murder

The body of a three-month-pregnant woman was discovered from Gouripur upazila in Mymensingh district on Sunday morning.

Police recovered the body from her in-laws' house at Bir West Para area of Ramgopalpur union in the upazila.

The victim, Sadia Akter, 24, was daughter of late Bokul Mia from Shamakjani village in Tarail upazila of Kishoreganj district. According to family sources, Sadia had married Shafiqul Islam, 28, son of Usman Gani, in February 2022. The couple had a 1.5-year-old daughter named Toba.

The deceased's family alleged that Sadia was murdered, claiming that she was strangled with a scarf and hanged from a doorframe by her in-laws.

Sadia's elder brother, Waliullah, said that they were informed of her death by a neighbor from her in-laws' house, who called them on a mobile phone. Upon arriving at the in-laws' home with other family members, they found Sadia's body hanging with a scarf tied around her neck. Her legs were resting against a bed and there were visible signs of injury on her forehead, wrist, and thighs. 

The family has called for a fair trial and justice for her murder.

At the time of the investigation, Sadia's in-laws were not present at the house and ttempts to contact Sadia's husband, Shafiqul Islam, by phone went unanswered.

Gouripur Police Station officer-in-charge Mirza Mazharul Anwar confirmed the recovery of the body and mentioned that an autopsy had been conducted at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. 

An unnatural death case has been filed and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding her death and take appropriate legal action, he added.
