Police recovered the hanging body of a housewife from her husband's residence in Deshgaon village under Hajiganj upazila of Chandpur.
Following the incident, Najat Bhuiyan Niswarga, husband of the victim, Sumaiya Akter Payel, 20, was arrested in connection with his wife's death.
According to the complaint, Payel married Niswarga on January 24, 2022, following a romantic relationship. However, Niswarga's parents disapproved of the marriage. The complaint further alleges that Niswarga, who is described as aggressive and a drug addict, subjected Payel to continuous mental abuse and recently demanded a dowry of Tk 2 lakh. When Payel's family failed to meet the dowry demand, it is alleged that Niswarga, with the help of his parents, killed her and staged the scene to look like a suicide.
Local residents confirmed that Niswarga has a history of substance abuse and violent behavior. Reports also suggest he had mistreated his first wife, who died under controversial circumstances.
However, Niswarga denied the allegations, claiming, "I was in the room with her but left for the bathroom. When I returned, I found the door locked and later saw her hanging from the fan."
Hajiganj Police Station OC Mohammad Mahiyuddin Faruq said, "The victim's father has filed a case accusing her husband, in-laws, and several unidentified individuals. We have arrested Niswarga and presented him in court. The body has been sent for autopsy and further actions will follow based on the findings."
