Police have arrested a youth in connection with the poisoning deaths of a woman and her 7-year-old daughter in Dhaka's Sadarghat area.
The arrest was made public at a press conference on Wednesday at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Center.
Deputy Commissioner Jasim Uddin of the Lalbagh zone disclosed that the suspect allegedly committed the murders after the victim, Madhuri Biswas, pressured him to marry her.
The accused, Bidhan Das, 25, a resident of Dashmina in Patuakhali, had been involved in an extramarital relationship with Madhuri, wife of Pinku Majumder from Terokhada in Khulna. Police revealed that the two had met through a mutual acquaintance who shared Madhuri's phone number with Bidhan.
According to the investigation, Madhuri and her daughter traveled to Dhaka to confront Bidhan and demand marriage. They reportedly journeyed together to the capital by launch. During the trip, Bidhan allegedly executed a premeditated plan by mixing herbicide into their drinking water.
After reaching Sadarghat on December 5, Bidhan left Madhuri and her daughter at the terminal under the pretext of fetching food and fled the scene. Both victims fell gravely ill and died while receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Following a case filed by Madhuri's elder brother, Narayan Biswas, at Kotwali Police Station on December 6, police tracked and arrested Bidhan 12 days later from the Khri Angel Dock area in Gazaria of Munshiganj.
During interrogation, Bidhan admitted to poisoning the victims, police said. Investigators are continuing their work to gather further evidence and prepare charges against the suspect.
